Would you like to help? We are looking for volunteers to help with station duties, maintenance and driving.
East Herts Miniature Railway is run solely by a small group of dedicated volunteers. Although the railway is open on Saturdays, Sundays, Bank Holidays and two days a week during school holidays, our volunteers can often be found working on the railway at other times.
We are always looking for more volunteers who would like to get involved. Whether you wish to be a Driver, Guard, Signalman or just help with the maintenance, you will be working alongside a friendly group of volunteers sharing the same experience.
If you can help we are looking for volunteers to train in the following areas:
Do you want to drive a 7¼" Gauge Train?
We are looking for responsible volunteer drivers to operate and drive our locomotives. During public running, we often haul trains of up-to 30 passengers at a time. We operate a fleet of diesel, electric and steam locomotives. If you are over 16 and would like to find out more about training to become a driver for us, please get in touch.
EHMR has a signal box. The track and trains at East Herts Miniature Railway are operated and controlled by a fully working ex-London Underground lever frame, rescued and restored by our volunteers. The Westinghouse frame itself was from Hyde Park Corner.
As a Signalman, volunteers you will be responsible for the managing the flow of the railway and service, allowing upto 5 trains running safety on the track.
During busy weekends and events, we often require the use of responsible volunteers to manage the platform. This role is perfect for our junior members or for those volunteers who do not drive.
After being fully trained, you will be responsible for managing the safe running of the station and the flow of passengers, assisting passengers with boarding and disembarking the service, checking tickets and dispatching trains. A responsible volunteer will need to be confident, polite and be able to deal with the general public of all ages, face-to-face.
Although mostly ‘behind there scenes’, but often seen at the forefront of the railway are our Engineers. An absolute vital role as without the dedication of our volunteer Engineers, there would be no railway. There are always jobs to be done and if you can help - there is a place for you. We are looking for people to help in all areas including carpentry, mechanics, electronics and gardening.
If you have any skills you would like to put to use and would like to join a friendly team of like-minded Volunteers - there is always a place for you at EHMR.
If you would like to help, why not pop along to the railway any running day and speak to our volunteers who will be happy to answer any questions you might have.
Alternatively you can contact us here to find out more.
